This page explains what happens to your details when you join the newsletter or send a message through authorjoelrivers.com. The short version: I only collect what I need to send you the newsletter and to reply to you. I never sell your details, and you can leave at any time.
Who is responsible
This site is run by Joel Rivers, the pen name of [YOUR LEGAL NAME], who runs the sole-trader business [REGISTERED BUSINESS NAME] in Sweden. For anything about your personal data, write to hello@authorjoelrivers.com.
What I collect and why
When you join the newsletter
I collect your email address and, if you give it, your first name. The newsletter service also records when and how you signed up, that you confirmed your subscription, and whether you open the emails or click their links, so I can see what readers find useful.
I use this to send you the free character guide Meet the Settlers of Esperan, news about my books, the cover reveal, behind-the-scenes notes and launch announcements. I do this because you asked for it (your consent). Every email has an unsubscribe link, and one click takes you off the list.
When you send a message
The contact form sends me your name, your email address, the topic you choose and your message. I use them only to read and answer your message, which is in both our interests. Messages are never added to the newsletter. I keep them for up to 12 months after our conversation ends and then delete them.
When you visit the site
The site has no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It sets no cookies. The fonts are stored on this site, so loading a page doesn’t contact Google or any other font service. The hosting provider processes technical details such as your IP address and browser type, only to deliver the pages and protect the site from attacks.
Who helps me
A few services handle data on my behalf. They may only use it to provide their service to me:
- MailerLite sends the newsletter and stores the subscriber list. Its data is hosted in the European Union.
- Web3Forms delivers contact form messages to my inbox. It is run from India and uses providers in other countries, so your message may be processed outside the European Union.
- Cloudflare hosts the website.
I don’t sell, rent or share your details with anyone else.
How long I keep your details
Newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe. After that I keep only a note that you unsubscribed, so you’re never emailed again by mistake. If you’d rather have that removed too, just ask. Contact messages are deleted 12 months after our conversation ends.
Your rights
You can ask to see the details I hold about you, have them corrected or deleted, receive a copy, or object to how I use them. You can withdraw your consent to the newsletter at any time. Write to hello@authorjoelrivers.com and I’ll answer within one month.
If you think I’ve handled your data wrongly, you can complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten) at imy.se, or to the data protection authority where you live.
Changes
If this policy changes, I’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects how I use newsletter subscribers’ details, I’ll tell subscribers by email first.
